Another very rushed catch up.
I don’t remember how I ever had time to go to work. I seem to remember the last thing I posted was a description of the new bathroom and a tale of how I had been virtually evicted from my house while it was being fitted. I was allowed back home late Monday night. I spent all day Tuesday and Wednesday cleaning away dust and builders debris and then Wednesday evening; I went back to my daughters house to look after the dogs and the house while they went to Ireland for a few days. I ended up taking my other daughters child with me because she had to work and couldn’t find child care. The house I’m looking after is about 5 miles out of town, two bus rides away and in the middle of the country. I’ve been busy looking after the dogs, amusing the grandchild and keeping the two wood stoves going to ward of the chilly country air. An inconvenient coincidence is that today; while staying in the country, I have to be in my own house all day to wait for the all important phone call from the electricity supplier to discuss how much they are going to increase my monthly payments by. Granddaughter and I were up at the crack of dawn, sorted the dogs out, raked the stoves, loaded enough logs to burn until we return this afternoon and were sitting on the fist bus before eight this morning. I’m dreading this phone call, apparently there was something wrong with my electricity meter, it was not accurately recording what I used, they replaced the meter, recalculated what I owe and are about to call me to give me the bad news. I then have to take the granddaughter back on two buses, hope the stoves have not gone out, feed the dogs, feed the granddaughter and get an early night ready to do the whole thing again tomorrow.
Tomorrow I have another inconvenient coincidence; the washing machine repair man is coming to look at my machine. In the midst of cleaning my house and washing curtains and sofa covers, the machine stopped working and tomorrow was the earliest day they could get someone out to fix it. This means I have to be back in my own house again tomorrow to wait for the repair man.
My daughter is coming back from Ireland late Sunday and I should be staying back home from Monday morning. On Monday I will only have twelve days before leaving for France. During those twelve days I have optician appointment, dentist appointment, eye hospital check up, visits to sick friend in Dundee and another friend staying with me for three days. I think that leaves me with about five free days to do all the things I need to do before going to France. I’ll attempt some work in the garden and maybe even hang the wall paper in the bathroom which will completely finish it off.
I still have a garden full of builders’ rubble and the old bathroom set plus, lots of assorted junk from my two sheds (thought I would take this opportunity to empty the sheds of years worth of accumulated rubbish) all waiting to be taken to the tip. I’m not sure exactly when that is happening but the daughter who is in Ireland is going to arrange the trip to the tip sometime next week.
A rather shifty looking young man driving a white van pulled up outside my garden and asked if he could have the old taps. As well as the taps from the bathroom there were about four other sets of old taps turned out from my shed. I said sure just take what you want; it’s all going to the tip anyway. He then sorted through every thing and took all the assorted taps, an old shower, a complete set of pine bathroom accessories, cabinet, mirror, towel rail, loo roll holder etc, an old TV, an old vacuum cleaner, a pile of childrens videos (who has a video player these days every one has DVD’s?), a pile of old wall brackets plus the pine shelves they support and he even detached the pine toilet seat from the old toilet and took that. He opened every bag of builders rubble, old tiles and stuff to check there was nothing of value in any of them. My kids thought I was silly to let such a ‘shifty’ looking person into my garden and sort through the rubbish but I don’t like sending any thing to the tip if it can be used and was quite happy to let him take things away. In fact I doubt I would ever have turned my shed out and agreed to so much going to the tip if they had not ‘encouraged me’. The bit that made me laugh was when he finished taking any thing that could possibly be of any use to any one, or had any sort of resale value, he then asked if he could take the rest of the rubbish to the tip for me for a small fee. I did think that was a bit of a cheek.
At the moment; much as I would like to, I’m not getting the time to go round visiting and commenting; and if things carry on like this, it may be another month or so, (when I get back from France), before I settle down and get back into visiting every one regularly. I can only apologise, I never imagined the first couple of months of retirement would be so busy. I’ll keep you posted and try my best to get round and visit before I disappear off to France for the Month.
The handsome looking chappie at the top is a fine looking garden ornament, described on the box as ‘’ a decorative bird, a stylish eyecatcher for every garden made from corrosive resistant metal’’. My granddaughter spotted him while we were out doing some grocery shopping. If I ever have time for gardening this year………..he is destined to stand next to the pond.

Love your friend up there. I have a collection of chickens, but he's a bit big for my small place and would overshadow my plants. LOL. I'm wondering when you had time to work too! That's a shame about your meter though it's not your fault. Don't they come round to read the meters there?
ReplyDeleteWill miss you while you are away and hope you have a wonderful time in France.
Hi Brenda..............story of my meter is complicated. Yes they do reaqd meters but I have two meters, one for day rate and one for the cheaper night rate, they don't 'do' this deal any more but I have storage heaters and the system was installed before they stopped the two meter system. They tried to double my repayments and I asked them to look at the meter. Apparently every thing was going through on the day rate. Now they have to 'estimate' what they 'think' I owe on day rate and night rate. I have no doubt they will 'estimate' on their side not mine.
DeleteI thought life was supposed to slow down as we get older, but as is obviously true with you as well Loretta, life just gets busier and busier for me too, it can't be right lol.
ReplyDeleteAt least you have a trip to France to look forward too....I hope the weather is better than it is here, raining now...suppposed to be 11 degrees but feels colder, dull and miserable. The sort of day when you look forward to it getting dark for at least a better quality of gloom... if that makes sense? With any luck you will find some sun on your travels and a bit of warmth, that would be nice.... I hope the part of France you are going to enjoys the loveliest of weather while you're there anyway Loretta.
What's all this nonsense about your electricity meter then? Whose meter is it? Who is responsible for its maintenance? Why should you pay for the malfunctioning of your electricity suppliers recording equipment? When was it last inspected?
I'd dispute this if I were you Loretta.....after all you always have the ombudsman if you exhaust the energy suppliers complaints procedures.
Why are they phoning you anyway?
Surely you want to see whatever they are proposing in writing and they should write to you with whatever repayment plan they think they are entitled to dream up.
How did they arrive at their figure? If the meter was faulty how do they know the true figure?
I know I should mind my own business but things like this makes my blood boil Loretta. I don't know who your supplier is, but SSE, the energy company behind Southern Electric, Swalec and Scottish Hydro, has revealed a leap in profits of almost 40%, just a month after announcing a 9% increase in bills last November. This cold weather is like pennies from heaven to them, bloody parasites.
Anyway, that is indeed a mighty fine fowl that your granddaughter spotted, very handsome indeed, I wish I had one of those.
Thanks Aaron..............Hopefully my life will be less busy in retirement .... SOON..... I think as soon as I get to France retirement begins for real. I've said this all along. The reason I decided to go to France in May and not April was because I knew there would be lots of bits to sort out before going, admittedly I didn't expect this month to be quite so hectic but I did set aside this month to sort every thing out before going to France. My sister said the weather there is good now, they are out planting their veg so that’s a good sign.
DeleteAs for the electric...........see reply above to Brenda, they were supposed to phone me once they had all the information and the meter had been fixed for their recalculation...........as it happened that was not the case, they have kept the standing order as it is for now and are 'reviewing' it. My fear is that they will increase it while I am away and I won't get the letter and therefore wont get the opportunity to phone them and argue.........such is life I guess, because once I'm in France I'm not stressing over this, I'll sort it out when I get back. I agree..............these people make me so mad, because they are a law unto themselves and we (the consumes) seem so powerless. But like I said, they have not increased the standing order for now and if they do it while I'm in France I'll be pissed off but deal with it when I get back. My supplier is Scottish Hydro electric and another thing that pisses me off is that no other supplier will take on the two meter system so I'm stuck with them, unless I want to pay daytime rate for storage heaters that heat up overnight and were designed to be run on cheap electricity. Yep…………………power suppliers are the bane of many peoples lives, oh that I could live in a house that had solar panels and a wind turbine.
Love your new rooster. He certainly is a colorful fellow! We are thinking of getting some chickens, real ones, for our place. That is, if we ever get the time to build a chicken coop. lol
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing you are retired, huh? Now it sounds like you should be just plain tired. lol My husband has been saying he should go back to work, so he can get some rest! Every day it seems like there is more and more to do around here. This morning he killed a huge wild hog that was headed for our vegetable garden. Even though we both had tons that needed doing, tomorrow we will be processing pork.Lots of pork.
I found the cutest sign, and I would like to share it with you, but don't know how here?!! It says 'Trespassers Will Be Composted!' Naturally I thought of you. lol
And I must say, I agree 100 percent with Aaron. The cheek of that utility company!
Have fun in France. Bring yourself back some seeds to grow. lol That's one of the things I would do.
Oh I would love real chickens; apparently the law entitles any one in this country to keep chickens on their own land. The only thing that stops me going out and getting them now, wondering who would look after them if I go away. The name of my garden blog came from a little sign that I found in a quirky gift shop, there is a picture of it at the top of my garden blog. And yes I agree with you and Aaron re the electricity supplier.............they are all bloody awful.
